An old travel companion excellently upgraded
It's a really great service from the original travel guides. I used Lonely Planet books when I was a backpacker over 20 years ago. They were superb then and are superb now.
What's nifty about the app-based version is how correctly it uses the smartphones functionality. By downloading the app, and the optional map, you don't use roaming data. It's an interactive, offline guide book. With pictures.
Because I travel for business and can often only spare a day for saying the city, I appreciate the summaries of top sites, great places to eat, good bars, as well as the cultural highlights.
Meanwhile, the searchability of the app is very useful. When we were in Prague I searched for vegetarian restaurants, as my wife is vegan, and chanced on some excellent eateries.
I'm deeply pleased to discover my old travel companion - my old, faithful travel commission - has had a fitting upgrade to the smartphone era.
We're glad we can help you explore the world, tshapshak. Happy travels!
A shame
I used this app all the time. It was honestly one of my favorite apps. I planned three vacations using it and even used it to find new things in the cities I've lived in. I liked this app so much, whenever I bought a physical travel book they became my go-to publisher. I always thought that the amount of content that they offered for free was too good to last, and I liked the app enough that I would have been willing to pay for the content if they'd handled this better. The way they went, however, putting EVERYTHING behind a paywall and only allowing you to subscribe to their entire catalog for $40 a year is crazy and seems like a fundamental misunderstanding of how people use the app. I just the other day recommended the app to a friend planning a trip to Berlin, and now I'm going to have to retract that.
Why would I pay $40 a year to access 8000 locations when I only want to use two guides at a time, one to plan a single vacation in one city and one to poke around for restaurants and shops in my home city? I don't want unlimited access to 8000 locations! I didn't use the app to idly poke around the attractions in cities I'm not going to visit for years, if ever. The sensible way to do this would be to let users buy individual cities. If I could buy an app guide for $5-$10 a pop, I would absolutely do that without blinking an eye.
We're glad you found the Guides app helpful on your travels, BSeanC. Recently we introduced a paid subscription model. Our writers are hard at work traveling the globe to update information, verify details and seek out the best places for travelers to discover. This is what makes our content trustworthy and independent, and different to other travel apps. The subscription plans help ensure that we can bring you the best and most up-to-date content from all over the world. The app now covers over 8,000 cities rather than 275 cities and includes new features like 360º videos, 'Bucket List' bookmarking and neighborhood guides. We currently include 5 free previews per month of sites and attractions without a subscription, and we sometimes make select cities free for a period of time. We offer one month, six month and one year subscriptions so each traveler can pick a subscription plan that suits their trip.
